How to Install DroidDeck: Play Steam PC Games on Android (2026 Guide)
Complete DroidDeck 0.3.1 setup guide: compatible Snapdragon devices, installing the APK and Linux runtime, signing in to Steam Big Picture and fixing Steam closing on Android 12, 13 and 14.
How to Install DroidDeck: Play Steam PC Games on Android (2026 Guide)
DroidDeck turns a Snapdragon Android handheld or phone into something very close to a Steam Deck. It runs Valve’s official Linux ARM64 Steam client in Big Picture mode and launches Windows games through Valve’s ARM64 Proton, with no root required. This guide covers everything from checking compatibility to playing your first game with DroidDeck 0.3.1.

Step 0: Check If Your Device Is Compatible
DroidDeck depends on the open-source Turnip Vulkan driver for Qualcomm Adreno GPUs, so the GPU is what matters most:
- Supported GPUs: Adreno 730, 740, 750 and 8xx. That covers phones and handhelds with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, 8+ Gen 1, 8 Gen 2, 8 Gen 3 and newer 8-series chips.
- Verified by the project: Ayn Odin 2, Retroid Pocket 5 and Ayaneo Pocket S, plus Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 8 Gen 3 phones.
- Architecture: the APK only contains ARM64 (arm64-v8a) code.
- Android version: Android 8.0 or later.
- Not supported: devices with MediaTek, Exynos or Google Tensor chips do not use Adreno GPUs, so they are outside the supported range.
Make sure you also have plenty of free storage: the Linux runtime, the Steam client, Proton and the games themselves are downloaded to the device and can take many gigabytes.
Step 1: Download and Install the DroidDeck APK
- Open the DroidDeck page on apkrepacks or use the download buttons at the top of this article (Global or Brasil server).
- When the download finishes, tap the DroidDeck-0.3.1.apk file in your notifications or in the Downloads folder of your file manager.
- If Android asks, tap Settings and enable Allow from this source for your browser or file manager (on Android 7 or older this is Unknown sources under Security).
- Tap Install, then Open.
Step 2: Install the Linux Runtime
On first launch, DroidDeck sets up a lightweight proot Linux runtime. This is where the Steam client, gamescope and Proton run.
- Use a fast and stable Wi-Fi connection; the download is large.
- Keep the device plugged in and the app open until the setup finishes.
- Follow the on-screen steps and accept the prompts.
Step 3: Download Steam and Sign In
DroidDeck does not bundle any Valve files. After you authorize it, the Steam client is downloaded directly from Valve’s official servers on your device. When it finishes:
- DroidDeck launches straight into Steam Big Picture.
- Sign in with your Steam account (Steam Guard works as usual).
- Navigate with the D-pad and analog sticks, just like on a Steam Deck.
Step 4: Install and Play a Windows Game
Pick a game in your library and install it as you would on a PC. When you start a Windows game, Steam runs it through Valve’s ARM64 Proton: FEX-Emu translates the x86/x64 code and DXVK turns DirectX calls into Vulkan on the Adreno GPU. Cloud saves and achievements sync natively, and installed games can be played offline.
Tip: start with lighter or older titles, then move to heavier games once you see how your device performs.
Step 5: Set Up Controls
Open the controller editor to map buttons and back paddles, adjust deadzones, calibrate gyro aiming and add virtual trackpads. You can choose Xbox 360 controller emulation or a dual-trackpad Steam Deck layout per game.
Fix: Steam Closes Immediately on Android 12, 13 or 14
If Steam exits right after launching, without any log, the usual cause is Android’s phantom process killer, which kills apps that start many background processes, as Linux runtimes do.
- Android 14 or newer: enable Developer options and turn on Disable child process restrictions.
- Android 12 and 13: connect the device to a PC with ADB and run:
adb shell "/system/bin/device_config set_sync_disabled_for_tests persistent"
adb shell "/system/bin/device_config put activity_manager max_phantom_processes 2147483647"
Restart DroidDeck afterwards. Also exclude DroidDeck from battery optimization so Android does not close it in the background.
DroidDeck FAQ
Do I need root?
No. DroidDeck runs entirely in user space, without root.
Is DroidDeck free?
Yes. It is open-source under the GPL-3.0 license, with no telemetry, no tracking and no hidden monetization.
Will every Steam game work?
No. Compatibility depends on Proton, the translation layers and your hardware. Demanding games may run slowly, and games whose anti-cheat blocks Proton will not start.
Is DroidDeck made by Valve?
No. It is an independent community project and is not affiliated with Valve. Steam and Proton are Valve trademarks.
How does it compare to Winlator or Steam Link?
